Magazine training
Magazine training with Pearl took 13 minutes in total. This was to familiarize Pearl with the box and to get her used to the feeding mechanism. We would watch her move away from the food slot and when the light and noise went off, she would start recognizing to return to the food slot. Every time throughout this training her response time would be faster. Once pearl could realize that the noise and light flickering meant she would get a treat and where the treat was coming from fairly quickly, we concluded, with the help of Prof. Trench, that Pearl had been successfully magazine trained. During this process we watched Pearl explore the box. This was very similar to the process in the book. We talked in class about how it was more of a familiarizing session than training or shaping and I think that was a very accurate way to understand this process.
